I woke some unknown time later to more darkness, the unsavory scent of rats, and a wavering beneath us to say we were still on a ship. But so far there was nothing about it I recognized.

I looked around and cursed. We were in a cell. Jakob had handed us over to the other ship as prisoners.

Something dug into my back, and I maneuvered my bound wrists to feel the edge of my hook tied there. Jakob. I had no other weapons, but that one Jakob had snuck through on me. Landon still lay on a stiff cot, unconscious.

Somewhere outside the cell, a door opened. I swiveled my gaze that direction as buttery light seeped in from the passageway. A woman strode toward us, light catching on her long, braided hair.

Her long, red hair.

I stood. “Arabella.”

“You remembered my name.” She put her hand to her chest, covering over a black amulet necklace, and grinned. The way she smiled was disturbing. “Pleasure to meet you again. Plus whoever this is.” She glanced at Landon.

I tried to think through my lingering fog. “You attacked us?” I knew they fought like pirates.

“I carry many flags.” She gave a wave of her hand. “I even have one for Az Elo, which is what I almost flew to get to you. But as it was, things turned out nicely.”

I was only half listening. So this ship was still afloat and very much moving by the feel of it. There was no porthole to check through to see what had happened to Jakob and his men, or even note what time of day it was. All I had to go off was the warm glow coming down the narrow stairwell, which could be evening light or lamplight.

And I wasn’t injured. Only a dull throb where Jakob had knocked me out. Was he working with Arabella? For most men, I’d assume so, but Jakob seemed the type who wouldn’t want anything to do with Arabella the Ruthless. He might be rough around the edges, but he wasn’t crooked.

Which begged the question of why we were here.

“What do you want?”

Arabella’s lithe hand came through the cell bars to stroke a finger down my cheek. I flinched. “Oh, but you are mistaken. I don’t want anything from you,” she said, voice dripping with fake pleasantry. Her nail slipped from my cheek, as sharp as any blade. Her tone turned just as sharp. “You are nothing but bait.”

She turned to walk away.

I knew who she would need me as bait for. “She won’t come!” I yelled after her. “Emme is too weak to sail. She’s probably dead already.”

Arabella only laughed. “Oh, she’ll come.” Then she slammed the door she’d entered through and left us in darkness once more.

My heart leapt. Her reply gave me both hope and dread at the same time for the one I missed, the one I’d been fighting to return to . . .

“She’ll come.”

She was still alive.
